screenshot doesn't put image on desktop

When I use Shift-Command-4 to take a partial screenshot of my iMac screen, the png image does not appear on the desktop. I found it in trash instead. Yesterday, my first day on Catalina, the png file appeared on the desktop many minutes after I took the screenshot, not immediately as expected.
