email accounts fail to connect to IMAP server and safari is very slow

Hi, my email accounts on my MAC fail to connect to IMAP server and safari is very slow. I can solve this for a very short period by restarting the computer but this only lasts a few minutes. I have a circa 2010 IMAC running High Sierra

I found some help advice which suggested deleting the email accounts and setting them back up again. I tried this with one account with the result that I can't add the account back now.

Thanks for the additional details regarding the Mac.

This might be from incompatible login items. This issue is not related to yours, but shows how to remove login items: If your Mac has a blue screen or other startup problems

Here are some suggestions:

Both items rely on the network. Check the connection to Wi-Fi: If your Mac doesn't connect to the Internet over Wi-Fi - Apple Support
For the Safari issues, these also might help: If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support
To narrow it down, also be sure to check your Mac in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support You can also try a new user as well: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for the advice. I have stated the computer in safe mode and the email accounts work ok and I have managed to add back the account I deleted. When I restart in normal mode the accounts fail to connect to the IMAP server again.

I obviously need to find out why this happens now.
