I've imported a complete LP to Garageband but I cannot get Garageband to make the "breaks" between the songs which are the markers for stop when you use the >button to reach a new song. Seems even long "pauses" do not have the wanted effect. Anyone got a good advise??

I think you will have to make separate songs. You can isolate the tracks by using edit->split region at playhead
I have tried that. It does not give me separate songs when transferred to iTunes
