using spotify on apple watch

is there a way i can listen to spotify with my apple watch and airpods independently of my iphone? for example: i want to go for a run and leave my phone at home but i want to be able to stream my music from spotify and not apple music. is this possible?

Spotify on Apple Watch I have an apple watch with cellular data. I recently got the Spotify app and paying for premium. Should I be able to listen to spotify without having my phone nearby? I can do this with Pandora and choose to play from my iphone or watch. Spotify on my watch only shows my phone as a device. Data is turned on for Spotify.
