is microsoft word and excel being updated to 64 bit capability

Depends on the version.

2011 or earlier will not get an update.

2016 can be updated to 64bit: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3187505/office-2016-for-mac-64-bit-upgrade

2019 and 365 are already 64 bit.

Newer versions of Microsoft Office are 64 bit.
