Can I pair iPhone 5c to the Apple Watch 1st generation?

I have a left over Apple Watch 1st generation, I am thinking of giving it to my dad, but he is using iPhone 5c iOS 10.3.3 and the Watch running watchOS 4.3.2. Can I pair it or I have to upgrade the iPhone 5s for him?

I can't borrow his iPhone because it may ruin the surprise.

Pairing Apple watch My sister gave my daughter an Apple Watch that she doesn’t wear. It was last paired on her old phone and she. I longer has it. Her current phone doesn’t show any paired devices, how can my daughter get the Apple Watch paired to her phone?

You will need 5s iPhone for it to work
