itunes smart playlist not updating

I have a smart playlist on my mac that filters out songs that have been played in the last 3 months. However, it hasn't updated since last December. It used to sync fine with both on the Mac and my iPod, but now it does nothing. How can I fix it without deleting my whole iTunes Library, which has numerous ripped CDs and iTunes Stores purchases since December?

Check the rules of the smart playlist to make sure that automatic updating is enabled. You can refresh the content of a smart playlist by selecting all and pressing delete. Tracks aren't removed from the library, but a random selection would be updated, for example.

Are you playing music from your iTunes library? If so, the playlist should update. If you play music from an iPod or iOS device, do you autosync or manually manage the music content on those devices? If you manually manage your device's music contents, play history from the device may not update your iTunes library.

Do you have an Apple Music subscription? If you do and you're using iCloud Music Library, play history from your iOS device does not sync back to your iTunes library, at least not consistently.
