Getting out of iCloud

How do I stop using iCloud? I suddenly, after years of not using it, getting notifications that I am running out of space. For the past 2 days, my modem has been transferring my info into the cloud, and I don't want ANY of it there!

If I try to log out, it takes away the information from my desktop calendar and I need that info to stay on the iMac.

HELP!

iMac 27", macOS 10.13

Wound up taking the iMac into a service store. 20 minutes with the tech and I understood what had happened and how to get my info back. Spent yesterday afternoon diddling around with Time Machine and have everything (I hope) except the Calendar information back.

Probably have to call the tech with a couple of more questions. At least I am no longer connected to iCloud, so my internet has sped up quite a bit. Why anybody who doesn't need to pass stuff along would want to put their life on-line is beyond my 40 years of playing around with computers ken.
