Apple Watch 4 with Cellular does it work if you don't yet have contract?

Hi - I want to purchase an Apple Watch 4 - I am thinking of getting the cellular version, but I will only enable the cellular later on when I switch providers at the end of my contract.

I just want to make sure the watch will work fine in the meantime just as a wifi version, even if I don't yet have a cellular contract for it?
