Can't respond to Gmail messages

My new MacBook Pro immediately opens gmail messgaes in full-screen mode, so the "reply" option is not avaliable. How do I change this?

MacBook Pro 15”, macOS 10.14

Standard release from Full Screen is esc. Tried that?
